What is Differentiated Instruction?Understanding by Design addresses what we want students to know, what they should be able to do, and how we measure if they understand big ideas.
Differentiated instruction concerns the adjustments we make to our instructional delivery that allow a diverse group of learners to all create meaning. It is a given that there are differences among students. There are differences in their readiness to learn, their interests, and their learning styles. Differentiated instruction is just a thoughtful response to those differences. "In truth far more students would be successful in school if we understood it to be our jobs to craft circumstances that lead to success rather than letting circumstances takes its course. Even the best curriculum delivered in a take-it-or-leave-it fashion will be taken by a few and left by too many." (Tomlinson & McTighe, 2006) This video by Pink Floyd is a look at education without differentiation. |
